ASIA UPDATES: Visas Issued To Indian Students Wanting To Study Abroad Drops By 56%

  • Visas issued to Indian students wanting to study abroad at foreign universities clocked a drop of 56%.
  • Bangladesh announces Secondary School Certificate (SSC) exams (10th grade) from November 14, 2021, and the Higher Secondary School Certificate (HSC) exams (12th grade) from December 2, 2021. The written exams would be based on a limited syllabus this year. Several science and technology universities in Bangladesh are going to conduct uniform admission tests in clusters to reduce pressure on the students. 
  • The World Bank will provide additional financial assistance of USD 50 mn to improve the education and health sector in Nepal.
  • With an objective of reopening universities soon, Sri Lanka plans to give both vaccines to all academic and non-academic staff of the university system.
  • To help underprivileged K-12 students cope up with online classes, Vietnam’s Ministry of Information and Communications will provide at least one million computers along with internet connections.
  • Distance learning has increased the education gap in the Philippines. The country is planning to resume limited in-person teaching for 120 schools.
  • The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has approved a $79.48 million loan with an objective of improving education and research at two Indonesian public universities. As per the report by the World Bank, prolonged school closure in Indonesia has interrupted learning and presents a risk of loss of income for students in the future.
  • 66.67% of secondary school students in Hong Kong believe their English-language syllabus lacks a connection with real life, leaving them unprepared for the future. 

AFRICA UPDATES: The University of Cape Coast (UCC), Ghana Ranks Among The Best 135 Global Universities  

  • According to Universities UK International, recruiters are competing for Nigerian students pursuing high-quality educational programs in foreign destinations. 
  • Algerian universities are facing challenges while vaccinating students and faculty. The Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research has postponed the start date of the academic year to vaccinate 70% of the 1.35 mn population. 
  • Ghana’s top university, The University of Cape Coast (UCC), secured a spot among the best 135 global universities for its high-impact research. 
  • Egypt’s Education Ministry announces the ban of unvaccinated university and school education workers from on-site work. Northern Kentucky University, United States announces partnership with Nahda University, Egypt.
  • The Media, Information and Communication Technologies Sector Education and Training Authority (MICT SETA) introduces 11 new subjects and qualifications to address the shortage of skilled labour in South Africa’s IT sector and increase the job readiness of students. 
  • According to the 2021 Economic Survey, Kenya’s education sector declined by 10.7 per cent in 2020, the second-highest decline after the accommodation and food services sector.
  • Keeping in mind the progress of the inoculation drive across the country, the TunisianUniversities Council (TUC) approved contact classes at all higher education institutions for the academic year 2021-22, which started in mid-September.

EURASIA UPDATES: Hungary Increases Higher Education Budget

  • Hungary has increased its higher education budget, which is approx. 1.2% of the country’s GDP, as compared to the European Union average of 0.8%.
  • Turkey will convene the National Education Council in December 2021, which will unlock new horizons for the education sector.

STUDY DESTINATIONS UPDATE: Air Canada Resumes Flights To India

  • New South Wales, Australia resumes classes for all overseas students except from China. To return to campus, the students need to be fully vaccinated by an Australia-approved vaccine. 
  • After a tough stance on India, Air Canada resumes its flights to and from India.  
  • India emerges as the most prolific overseas education market for the UK economy
  • USA announces the ‘Quad Fellowship’ for Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers at its leading universities.
