POPULAR STUDY DESTINATION UPDATES

US | US embassy to start visa interviews for Indian students from mid-Nov
The US Embassy in India has announced that visa interviews for Indian students will be open from mid-November till the end of December. Read more here.

Canada | Canada to remove working hour restrictions for international students 
To address Canada’s labor shortages, the government will temporarily remove the restrictions on working hours for international students in the country from November 15. Read more here

Netherlands | Receives approx. 17k student permit applications
The Netherlands received 17,000 student permit applications up until July this year and 10,000 international students received residence permits. Read more here.

Australia | To restrict the number of working hours for international students
The Australian government will put a cap on the number of hours international students can work in the country from July 2023.  This move is aimed to bring a balance between work and study. Read more here.

ASIA UPDATES

  • The Government of India has developed the National Credit Framework to enable the integration of academic and vocational domains to ensure flexibility and mobility between the two.
  • Foreign universities can set up their international campuses in India in the Gujarat International Finance Tec-City (GIFT City), without the need to follow domestic regulations and can repatriate profits without any restrictions – a concession that removes a major roadblock.
  • The National Examination Board (NEB), Nepal starts preparations to complete secondary education through a single registration and aims to implement the plan from the current academic session. 
  • Malaysia received 115,477 applications this year and also assured that the automated placement system does not employ a racial quota or preferential treatment in the automated entry selection to Malaysia’s public varsities.
  • 396 Sri Lankan students win Allama Iqbal Scholarships to Study in Pakistan under HEC’s project, Pak-Sri Lanka Higher Education Cooperation Programme. 
  • Representatives of eight Vietnamese and Cambodian universities and the Francophone University Agency (AUF) came together for the workshop in Belgium on building common development strategies for higher education.

AFRICA UPDATES

  • The UK government to consider tightening the rules on Nigerian dependents who accompanied foreign students in the 12 months to June 2022.
  • Tanzania‘s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology has directed Higher Education Loans Board (HESLB) to take essential steps to ensure a smooth process in disbursal of loans to eligible students.
  • African universities have made dramatic progress in the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2023 as, for the first time, 97 universities from 17 countries, up from 71 last year, have been rated to be part of the best universities globally, with 10 of them in the top 500.
  • Egypt has launched its 1st intellectual property (IP) strategy, which will be executed by the higher education sector and research institutions in the country.
  • To help students get technical skills relevant to a digital economy, Kenya’s education stakeholders have affirmed their commitment to the early introduction of the coding curriculum in schools.
  • Morocco’s Minister of Higher Education announced a variety of measures for implementing English language to improve the country’s scientific research and higher education.
