POPULAR STUDY DESTINATION UPDATES

United States | Grants 82,000 visas to Indian students this year

In an official statement, the US Embassy in India said the USA has issued 82,000 student visas to Indians in 2022, higher than any country. As per the embassy statement, the US embassy in various parts of India prioritized processing student visa applications from May to August this year to ensure that the maximum number of qualified students could make it in time for their scheduled study program start dates. Read more here.

Canada | 75,000 study permit applications submitted from India in the processing stage

The Canadian government has stated that it is currently prioritizing those applications for clients whose studies are starting in September while extending the remote learning option by another year. Read more here.

France | Hits 400,000 international student mark

According to the latest statistics from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the number of international students enrolled in France has hit a record high mark of 400,026, the highest growth registered since 2005. Read more here.

Netherlands | Plans to build 60,000 affordable homes 

To ease the student housing crisis, the government of the Netherlands has announced the National Student Housing Action Plan. It will build 60,000 affordable student homes between 2022 and 2030 in cooperation with students, municipalities, educational institutions, private investors, and housing associations. Read more here.

Australia | Government aims to encourage international students to study in Western Australia

Government invests $16.8 million to encourage international students to study in Western Australia. The program will focus on incentivising agents and continuing international student support initiatives. Read more here.

ASIA UPDATES

  • India and the UK have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to facilitate the seamless exchange of students. The academic qualifications of students from both countries will be recognized by higher education institutions in India and the UK.
  • The dearth of research culture in higher education in Bangladesh due to the lack of adequate spending by Bangladeshi universities is affecting the quality of higher education in the country.
  • Stricter document verification for Nepali students by Australia is likely to affect the number of students migrating to Australia for higher education.
  • Increasing levels of education among Malaysian women have had a positive effect on the country’s economic growth as they play the dual role of socioeconomic welfare of the family and the development of the country, stated Malaysia’s Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Noraini Ahmad.
  • UNESCO, the Volvo Group, and the Swedish Embassy in Pakistan have joined hands for an education drive in Pakistan to improve the retention of students through a focused approach toward teacher training and classroom strategies.
  • Thailand and the EU have signed off on a new scheme which permits Thai researchers to join European Research Council-funded projects.

AFRICA UPDATES

  • More than 46,000 Moroccans enrolled in French Universities in 2022 to pursue higher education, according to recent data from Campus France.   
  • Financial services giant Visa has announced that it recently signed a partnership with the Financial Services Consumer Education Foundation worth USD 200,000 to support financial education in South Africa.
  • As disclosed by the US Consul General Will Stevens, nearly 13,000 Nigerian graduates and under-graduates students are seeking admission into 1000 universities across the US. 
  • Algeria has hired 5,000 English language teachers for its primary schools, with an aim to step away from the use of French, associated with the country’s colonial past.
  • Egypt’s Minister of Higher Education Dr. Mohamed Ayman Ashour announced the launch of a pilot professional teaching certificates project to develop 2,000 teachers in association with Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO), and Saleh A. Kamel Humanitarian Foundation.
