United States | Plans to roll out many student visa appointments

The US will roll out a large number of student visa appointments in the ensuing months starting next week. Mission India aims to recruit more officers and train existing staff members to achieve this. Read more here

Canada | Increases Express Entry proof of funds for 2022

Canada updates the proof of settlement funds requirement for Express Entry candidates in the Federal Skilled Worker Program (FSWP) and the Federal Skilled Trades Program (FSTP). Read more here

United Kingdom | Universities oppose limitation on the number of students

Many universities in the United Kingdom oppose the UK government’s consultation on higher education reform to limit the number of students and access to loans. Read more here

Netherlands | International students enrollment increases by 12%

The number of international students enrolled in Dutch higher education universities for the academic year 2021-22 was 115,068, an increase of 12% from the previous year. The top countries of origin are Germany, Italy, Romania and China. Read more here

New Zealand | To fully open on 31 July 2022

The country’s international border will reopen to all visa holders and international tourists from 31 July 2022. This is two months ahead of the earlier scheduled reopening. Read more here

Denmark | Mulls over a change in permanent residency employment rule

After carefully evaluating the current COVID-19 situation, the German authorities extend existing Coronavirus entry restrictions until the end of May. The restrictions were supposed to end on April 28. Read more here

AFRICA UPDATES

  • The Association of African Universities (AAU) partners with Nigeria’s Committee of Vice- Chancellors for development of higher education in the country. 
  • Ghana’s government’s priority is to make education fit for its purpose. Under its Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics programme, the government would equip Ghanaian students with 21st-century skills to make them job-ready and globally competitive.
  • More than 11% of South Africans who are educated and high-income earners are considering emigration to countries such as the US, UK, Germany, Canada and Australia.
  • Kenya’s Higher Education Loans Board (HELB) announced an extension of the Covid-19 100 penalty waiver by two months to June 30, 2022, which has been in effect from March 1, 2022.
