United States | Announces $1.5 million in grants to 44 colleges and universities

As per the US Consulate, the US issued 14,600 Indian student visas (F1 type) between January and May 14. Read more here

Canada | Preferred for the safety and stability

Canada extends work permits by 18 months under the Post-Graduation Work Permit Program (PGWPP). This applies to international students who no longer have it, or the visa will expire between September 20, 2021 and December 31, 2022. Read more here

United Kingdom | Witnesses increase in undergrad study as compared to 2021 

As per the latest UCAS June data, 135,000 international students have applied to undergraduate study in the UK this year, an increase of 3% compared to 2021 and a 2.8% decrease compared to the 2020 peak of 139,000 undergraduate applicants. Read more here

France | Experiences increase in the number of study visas

France witnesses a rebound in the number of study visas for 2021, increasing 25% compared to 2020 and 3% against pre-pandemic 2019.  France has approx. 365,000 international students, an increase of 18% over five years earlier. Read more here

ASIA UPDATES

  • UK and India signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) recognising each other’s higher education qualifications. This agreement will likely attract more international university students to the UK.  
  • IIT-Madras in India is considering setting up its campus in Tanzania, Nepal, and Sri Lanka to promote a global presence on the world map.
  • 189 Pakistani students have been awarded the prestigious Fulbright Scholarship to pursue advanced studies and research at leading universities in the US. This move is aimed to promote educational and cultural exchange between the United States and Pakistan. 
  • The Summer Conference 2022, part of a Partnership for Higher Education Reform (PHER) project, organised in Vietnam, Hanoi, on July 29 2022 witnessed the participation of more than 200 experts. PHER is a five-year project costing US$14.2 million funded by the United States to help three universities in Vietnam become high-quality higher education institutions.
  • Sri Lanka schools reopened after shutting down due to an acute fuel shortage.

AFRICA UPDATES

  • The United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) says close to 12 million Nigerian children are expected to access the Nigeria Learning Passport (NLP) by 2025.  Also, increased wait times from the Central Bank of Nigeria to approve the transfer of funds at a discounted rate has left many Nigerian students anxious.
  • The Association of African Universities (AAU) signs a five-year MoU with the American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) to advance STEM Education in Africa and North America.
  • The Higher Education Loans and Scholarships Board (HELSB) awards student loans to over 1,000 first-year students at Mulungushi University, Zambia, for the 2022-23 academic year.
  • Ghana releases GHS 57,460,000 as a feeding grant for 46 colleges across the country to improve and sustain quality education.
  • To respond to growing demands from academics and students, young Algerians will soon be taught English at primary school.
  • Egypt will reserve $344mn to launch 24 new national universities and $23.41mn to complete the establishment of technological universities.
