United States | Witnesses decline in Chinese students enrolling at US colleges

As per Wall Street Journal, the US witnessed a steep decline in Chinese students attending US universities and colleges. This drop raises new concerns about international student enrollment in US colleges and universities. Chinese students account for the majority share of international students in the US. In 2021, the country contributed close to 34.8% of the total international students as per the data released by Project Atlas. Read more here

United Kingdom | Overseas students surpassed British students in gaining entry to the country’s coveted universities 

Overseas students are surpassing British students in getting admission to some of the country’s elite universities, such as Oxford and Cambridge. Four in ten UK applicants are being rejected from the two most esteemed universities for the first time. Read more here

Ireland | Overseas arrivals for June 2022 witnesses strong recovery

As per the recent data published by the Central Statistics Office (CSO) of Ireland, the number of overseas arrivals reached 88 per cent of the pre-pandemic levels for June 2022, which is a dramatic recovery as compared to June 2021. Read more here

Germany | Reduced budget will result in elimination of scholarships

The DAAD asks the German Federal Foreign Office to reduce cuts to its budget. This will result in multiple programs and scholarships being eliminated, with around 6,000 scholarships slated to be cancelled. This may negatively impact the attractiveness and competitiveness of Germany as a top study destination for international students. Read more here

ASIA UPDATES

  • On India’s 76th Independence Day, the University of Dubai (UD) joins hands with top-tier Indian educational institutions such as IITs (Indian Institute of Technology), IIMs (Indian Institute of Management) and other autonomous universities to launch a programme for exchanging students and faculty for research collaborations.
  • The Partnership for Higher Education Reform (PHER), involving the US Agency for International Development (USAID), three Vietnamese and other important entities, was launched on August 1, 2022. This is expected to improve the academic quality and market relevance of Vietnam’s higher education institutions.
  • After 2.5 years and one of the most extended pandemic-induced school closures globally, the Philippines will finally reopen their doors to students.  
  • Bangladeshi students are under pressure as the saga of visa delays continues due to the backlogs at the US embassy. Many students are expected to start classes in mid-August, but their visa appointments are yet to be scheduled.
  • As a part of transforming education, Malaysia will develop a centralised reporting system to record student assessment results. This will improve the teacher’s workload and the system’s efficiency. 
  • Thailand moots for Bahasa Melayu as the third language in its education sector.

AFRICA UPDATES

  • Tanzania’s Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa directed the ministry of Education, Science and Technology to continue monitoring the conduct of agencies registered to coordinate students who go to study at universities abroad in order to avoid fraud by fake agents.
  • Nigeria recently announced that its spending on education is 26% above the recommended budgetary allocation to the sector by the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation.
  • Kenya’s President Uhuru Kenyatta challenges universities to be more responsive to a dynamic global economy and change tack in the delivery of higher education.
  • Ghana addresses the need to strengthen institutions of higher learning to build capacities in Science, Technology and Innovation (STI). 
  • Egypt will add 12 new modern non-profit universities for the coming academic year to upgrade the higher education system in the country.
