ASIA UPDATES: Surging COVID Cases Throws A Spanner In The Works For Many Southeast Asian Countries

  • India’s daily new COVID-19 cases remain around 42,000 (as of earlier this week). A majority of the states are witnessing declining cases, including Maharashtra, Delhi, Gujarat, Uttar Pradesh, etc. Approximately 7% of India’s population is fully vaccinated as of 26 July 2021. 
  • The CBSE Board has declared Class 12 results on its official website on 30 July 2021 for roughly 13 lakh students. The passing rate is 99.37% for the year. For the remaining 65,000 students, the results will be announced in August. 
  • The Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE) has released 2021 results for the ICSE Class 10 and ISC Class 12. 
  • A few Indian states, such as Maharashtra, Haryana, Punjab, have resumed physical classes in a staggered approach. 
  • The Delhi Skill and Entrepreneurship University (DSEU) has signed an MoU to train and help students find employment opportunities in Japan.
  • Coronavirus cases surge in Southeast Asia, especially in Indonesia, Malaysia, Vietnam, Thailand and Myanmar. The new COVID-19 wave has disrupted universities reopening plans and higher education in the affected countries. 
  • Considering the pandemic scenario, Malaysia plans to continue with home-based teaching until August. The country’s Ministry of Higher Education (MoHE) has requested public universities to bring down their academic fees to ease the financial burden of COVID-19 pandemic victims. 
  • Thailand’s Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha also urges universities and schools to lower their tuition fees by up to 50% to help virus affected families.
  • Vietnam’s capital Hanoi undergoes a 15-day lockdown, starting 24 July 2021, to curb the spread of the virus.  
  • Dhaka University in Bangladesh develops a new online exam system to help students complete their semesters without attending classroom sessions in the university. 

AFRICA UPDATES: 70% Increase In Number Of Egyptian Students Enrolling At UK Universities In Last 6 Years

  • South Africa plans to reopen schools due to receding coronavirus cases and aggressive vaccination drive for the education sector. 
  • Ghana and the United Arab of Emirates (UAE) will collaborate and adopt the best international learning practices to propel the growth of the education sector in both the countries.
  • As per the education search platform Erudera.com, there has been an increase in Egyptian students enrolled at higher education in the UK over the past 6 years.
  • Global Partnership for Education grants Nigeria $105m to boost the education sector in the cou ntry. 
  • As per UNICEF estimates, 40% of school children across Eastern and Southern Africadropped out of school due to COVID-19 induced lockdown. 
  • Zimbabwean Government postpones Higher Education Examination Council (HEXCO) examinations to curb coronavirus cases.
  • The Arab University Rankings, published by Times Higher Education, ranked 125 universities across the region. Egypt’s Zewail Institute of Science and Technology secures 10th place. Tunisia is represented in the top 50, while Algeria claims a spot in the top 100.

EURASIA UPDATES: Russian Universities In Talks With Indian Varsities For Faculty/Students Exchange

  • Many Russian universities have initiated conversations with Indian universities and health care providers to explore the possibilities of faculty/student exchange and joint research initiatives. 
  • The Hungarian government is facing a difficult time post its controversial new anti-LGBTIQ law, with a total of 30 embassies and 12 cultural institutes expressing support for the LGBTIQ community.

  • Top global university graduates can secure a work visa in the UK even without a job offer. This move by the government is aimed to boost innovation and increase the country’s competitiveness after Brexit.  
  • The US Department of Education and State recently issued a joint statement to pledge renewed US commitment to international education.
  • More students opt for UK universities, with Australia denying entry to international students.
