ASIA UPDATES: Many Countries Extend Lockdown Due To Surge In COVID-19 Cases

  • A few Indian states such as Maharashtra and Haryana are considering reopening schools for in-person classes in areas free from COVID-19 for higher classes 8-12.
  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) is planning to release Class 10 and 12 results by the end of July on the official website of CBSE.
  • Despite a green signal from UGC, public universities in Bangladesh are struggling to hold online exams, whereas private universities have been conducting their educational activities virtually.
  • On recommendation from the health sector, Sri Lanka’s Education Ministry is mulling over a program to reopen schools with not more than 100 students in July. 
  • The number of coronavirus cases in Vietnam crosses the 1,500-mark. The country’s economic hub Ho Chi Minh City enters lockdown for two weeks to combat the spread of infection, starting July 9 2021. 
  • Despite the lockdown, Malaysia witnesses an uptick in the number of Covid cases. The country reported 8,868 new cases last Thursday, the country’s second-highest daily infection count since the outset of the pandemic. 
  • Amidst a scarcity of oxygen supplies, Indonesia is experiencing a spike in daily new infections and deaths. Adding to this list is Thailand which is also undergoing stricter restrictions to slow the spread of infection.
  • Considering the resurgence in coronavirus cases, Nepal cancels all pre-scheduled university level examinations until further notice.

AFRICA UPDATES: Egyptian Universities Adopt Credit Hour System

The Egyptian government has approved draft legislation that would empower public universities to set the time required by students to graduate in hours instead of years. The country has also seen the largest number of students enrolled in higher education in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

As part of its Higher Education for Economic Transformation Project, the World Bank allocates US$425 million to foster the growth of higher education in Tanzania.

With the imposition of new lockdown rules amid the COVID-19 third wave, South Africanuniversities have suspended in-person classes and examinations for the next two weeks. 

Zambia’s primary, secondary and pre-schools will continue to conduct online classes and reopen only after ascertaining their readiness. 

Nigeria is facing a unique challenge as the country reports an increase in the number of fake university certificates for people who did not attend universities.                       

Tunisia is developing a new program to attract more international students. It plans to have 10% of all higher education students coming from other countries by 2025.

EURASIA UPDATES: Russia To Admit International Students Who Have Been Vaccinated 

  • Higher education universities in Russia plan to admit international students who have been vaccinated. The country intends to accept all available vaccines against COVID-19.
  • Turkey plans to conduct a virtual fair for international students to promote Turkish universities from July 27-29. 

STUDY DESTINATIONS UPDATE: UK Universities Get More Applications Than Previous Years

  • The UK sees a 30% increase in the number of undergraduate applications from Indian students despite ongoing pandemic related travel restrictions. 
  • The US government rolls back a rule that aims to fix the time period of admission and stay procedure extension of non-immigrant students. 
  • University of Auckland, LightPath and UP Education initiated the concept of Vietnam Study Hub. Under this concept, students will be offered a dedicated place to meet their peers, study together, and receive learning and career support at no extra cost.
