Australia | To close dual-study visa loophole for foreign students

Germany | Indians represent the largest international group studying in the country

As per the statement from German Ambassador to India Philipp Ackermann, the number of Indian students studying in Germany has increased by 25 per cent within the last year, making this nationality the largest international group studying in Germany. Read more here

Netherlands | Number of international students continues to ascend

According to the data released by the Immigration and Naturalisation Service (IND), the Netherlands sees an increase in the number of new international students, with almost 18,000 of foreign students applying for a residence permit in the first seven months of this year. Read more here

ASIA UPDATES

  • After the guidelines issued by the regulator in August, draft guidelines on the recognition of degrees from foreign institutions have prompted a row between India’s higher education regulator and a major university association that is currently evaluating degree equivalence.
  • The Japanese government encourages universities to open branches or campuses overseas to increase the presence of Japanese universities overseas to attract foreign students to Japan.
  • The head of the economic team of the Marcos administration is proposing to review the free college education in state universities and colleges (SUCs) in the Philippines.
  • For the first time in Sri Lanka, local and international students can study Australian university undergraduate programmes in various areas such as biomedical science, cyber security, design and commerce at the new Edith Cowan University (ECU) campus in Colombo.
  • The government of Switzerland, in collaboration with the Higher Education Commission (HEC), announces the “Excellence Scholarship Programme” for the upcoming academic year 2024-25 for the Pakistani students. 

AFRICA UPDATES

  • The US State Department has confirmed that this year it is issuing more student visas to applicants from African countries, such as Ghana and Nigeria, than any time in the previous six years.
  • Over 100 postgraduate students who have not returned to Nigeria following the completion of their studies may face repatriation or be required to reimburse government scholarships.
  • A group of 260 Tanzanian higher education students pursuing agricultural studies departed for Israel on Sunday to embark on an intensive 11-month training program.
  • The Higher Education and Training Minister of South Africa, Dr Blade Nzimande, has underscored the need for additional industry involvement in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) college curriculum review process.
  • The UK plans to launch a series of education initiatives in Rwanda during a three-day visit by a Foreign Office minister.
