ASIA UPDATES: UGC clears course structure for the four-year undergraduate programme

  • The Indian government agency, University Grants Commission (UGC) has cleared the course structure for the four-year undergraduate programme (FYUP). The programme will be divided into eight semesters lasting 90 days each.
  • Malaysia makes the Malay language a compulsory subject for international students studying at local universities.
  • The Philippines Department of Education aims to streamline requirements for schools that wish to conduct limited face-to-face classes.
  • Vietnam and Hungary sign a cooperation agreement on tertiary education and the implementation of the Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Programme for 2022-2024.
  • Thailand’s Ministry of Education is mulling over the protocol for reopening schools.

AFRICA UPDATES: South Africa’s out-of-school children count triples from 250,000 to 750,000 between Mar’20 and July’21

 

  • With many schools yet to reopen, the count of out-of-school children in South Africa tripled from 250,000 to 750,000 between the period March 2020 and July 2021. Also, many tertiary institutions in the country have started accepting applications for the 2023 academic year. 
  • Kola Daisi University (KDU) in Nigeria partners with foreign institutions to stay abreast of its students’ demands and integrate new-age and technology-driven programmes into its curricula.
  • Algeria and Tunisia discuss ways for enhanced cooperation in higher education and scientific research.
  • The Ghana Education Service (GES) released 2021/2022 Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) for Senior High Schools (SHS) and Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) schools across the country.

EURASIA UPDATES: Several UK scholarships for international students are still accepting applications 

  • Turkey’s education minister leaves an open door for war-affected Ukrainian students and says they can include these students in its education system.
  • Hungary allows international students impacted by the Russia-Ukraine war to continue studies at Hungarian universities.

STUDY DESTINATION UPDATES: Australia witnesses bounce back in Indian visitor visa applications 

  • Education New Zealand announces the second phase of its online education pilot. The objective is to convert the online audience into a viable commercial proposition for education providers in the country.
  • The Governments of Australia and India will establish a taskforce to address the recognition of online and blended learning, joint degrees and offshore campuses to improve two-way mobility. 
  • While other countries such as the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia have eased travel restrictions, the United States requires vaccinated travellers to take an antigen or PCR test before departure. However, the country is mulling over the removal of these restrictions. 
  • Ireland’s Minister for Education announces ambitious reform plans for a Senior Cycle of education for post-primary students.
  • Several UK scholarships for international students are still accepting applications for 2022-23.
