HIGHLIGHTS

  • Indian Student Survey Assessment: Academica Group, in partnership with Worldwide Educonnect and ICS (India) conducted a short survey on the response of Canadian institutions to the changes of admission criteria of Indian students. More to follow in our next newsletter.
  • India’s new daily cases fall below the threshold 50k mark, on account of the robust vaccination program across the country and strict lockdown across major states. 
  • The Education Ministry is mulling over conducting CBSE class 10 and 12 exams in offline mode in August for students who are dissatisfied with their results based on the new assessment.
  • The University of Kerala, India is the most preferred destination for higher education for overseas students. This year the university is hosting students from 35 countries.
  • Turkey announced further relaxation of COVID-19 restrictions from July 1, 2021.
  • The Graduate Immigration Route will open on July 1, 2021, this will allow the UK to retain the best international students post-study.The US Embassy in India aims to add additional appointments in July and August for student visas.

ASIA UPDATES: COVID-19 Daily Cases Fall Below 50K Mark. Will Indian Education Sector Recover Soon?

  • For CBSE students dissatisfied with their class 10 and 12 results, the Education Ministry in India may conduct offline exams in August if the situation looks conducive. 
  • With 1,042 applications from international students across 35 countries, the University of Kerala emerges as the most preferred destination for higher education for overseas students. 
  • According to the Department of Education in the Philippines, the private elementary and high schools may kick off their school year without waiting for the approval of the general school calendar. Also, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) allows  93 higher educational institutions to conduct limited face-to-face classes in the Philippines country.
  • On June 26, 2021, Vietnam witnessed 738 new coronavirus cases, the highest daily ever since the outset of the pandemic.  
  • Malaysia’s Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) is likely to expedite the results of applications for admission to public higher education institutions (IPTA) for the academic year 2021-2022.
  • Sri Lanka’s plans to reopen schools get put off due to a shortage of vaccines for school’s staff. 
  • The World Bank approves $191 million credit to help Bangladesh improve education and bring digitization to the country’s education sector.

AFRICA UPDATES: Amid The Fear Of The COVID-19 Third Wave, South Africa To Allow Schools To Remain Open

  • The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) announced its plan to postpone the May/June 2021 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in Nigeria to August 2021. 
  • South African Minister of Basic Education welcomes the government’s decision to allow schools to remain open amid COVID-19 third wave.
  • Even as Kenya’s technical and vocational education and training institutions (TVETs) final year students have been allowed to get back to schools and attend exams, concerns remain over the difficulty in learning practical skills.   
  • As per the joint report by the World Bank and the Zimbabwean government, the country is facing a shortage of skills that can deter the country’s economic growth.
  • The Zambia National Education Coalition (ZANEC) Executive Director George Hamusunga has called for schools not to close prematurely but rather tighten the COVID-19 prevention and mitigation measures in schools to sustain learning in the country.
  • In its endeavour to boost the growth in the tertiary education sector, Gambia is seeking to partner with education centres in the West Africa sub-region. 
  • As per the Times Higher Education, Lagos State University is Nigeria’s best young university. 
  • Between 2014/15 and 2019/20, there has been a 70% rise in the number of Egyptianstudents attending UK universities.
  • Thousands of Rwandan candidates in the Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) segment began their exams on June 14, 2021 as the first phase of the national examinations.


EURASIA UPDATES: Turkey Announces Easing In Restrictions From July

  • For international students, the Russian government will submit a new bill to simplify the procedure to obtain temporary residency permits for the entire study duration and not for three years, as before.
  • Turkey announced further relaxation of restrictions from July 1, 2021 as a part of gradual normalisation from the outbreak. 
  • 10 Hungarian universities featured in Shanghai Ranking Consultancy’s Global Ranking of Academic Subjects (GRAS) that graded 2,000 educational institutions/universities from 93 countries.

STUDY DESTINATIONS UPDATE: Indian Students To Benefit From Post-Study Work Visa Deadline Extension

  • Australia approved a plan to see the return of 160 international students per fortnight on June 18, submitted by South Australia. Similar plan in New South Wales will also be approved in early July. 
  • The US Chambers of Commerce launches the initiative to increase the H-1B quota. Along with this, the Federal US body recently announced that it will allow a few foreign workers to re-submit their H-1B visa applications. 
  • The US Embassy is working on giving additional appointments to visa seekers in July.
  • Overseas students who began their studies in Autumn 2020 have time until Sept 27, 2021, to enter the UK with permission to qualify as an applicant for the Graduate route visa.
