United States | Seeks collaboration with Greek institutions 
US institutions seek close collaborations with counterparts in Greece, to renew focus on academic partnerships. The US Department of State, the government of Greece, and the Institute of International Education will host 54 higher education institutions in November. Read more here.

Canada | Widens its gates for immigrants  
Canada plans to widen its borders to immigrants to tackle the problem of labour market shortages. The country aims to welcome 14.5 lakh permanent residents over the next three years, starting 2023. Read more here.

Australia | International students are coming back
The number of overseas students in Australia has risen by more than 120,000 since the country reopened their borders in December 2021. Read more here.

Germany | Sees record increase in the number of foreign students
According to the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), 350,000 international students have attended higher education institutions in Germany during the winter semester 2021/22, an 8% increase compared to last year. Read more here.

Norway | Allocates NOK 50 mn to 17 universities

The Norwegian government allocates NOK 50 million to a total of 17 universities. The fund will cover travel expenses for students participating in internships not close to their place of study. Read more here.

ASIA UPDATES

  • Sri Lanka to open several new universities to speed up the country’s higher education system.
  • International foreign language certification exams in Vietnam have been halted, with the IELTS test postponed until further notice, causing panic for exam-takers and study-abroad applicants.
  • The federal education minister urges the Higher Education Commission (HEC) in Pakistan to seek quality education instead of issuing no-objection certificates (NOCs) for establishing new universities and higher education institutes in the country.
  • The United States and Indonesia launch the Higher Education Partnership Initiative (HEPI) Program to increase Indonesians’ access to quality education.
  • Several Bangladeshi universities and medical colleges will join an education conference in Dubai next week to draw students from the UAE and other Middle Eastern countries.

AFRICA UPDATES

  • Tanzanian education authorities aim to increase the number of students in science programs in higher education institutions from 40,000 in 2020 to 106,000 in 2026.
  • The UNESCO International Center for Higher Education Innovation trains 50 lecturers across five tertiary institutions in digital education to strengthen the digital transformation of higher education teaching and learning in Nigeria.
  • To minimize the unbearable burden of subsidized education, Kenya seeks to lock students from wealthy families out of state-funded university learning. 
  • The Government of Ghana secures 12.8 million Euros from Austria to modernise 10 Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions in the country
