ASIA UPDATES
- According to a report from the Office for Students (OfS), applications from Indian students dropped 20.4% in 2023-24 compared to the previous year.
- NTU Singapore is launching a new course in process engineering and synthetic chemistry to fill the skills gap and produce graduates with chemical engineering and chemistry skills.
- The Commission on Higher Education (CHED) emphasized the importance of international upskilling and reskilling for faculty members of Philippine higher education institutions (HEIs) during the higher education mission in Australia.
- In recent years, there has been a consistent rise in the number of international students enrolling in universities in Vietnam, highlighting a growing recognition of the quality of higher education in the country.
- Sri Lanka has surpassed Malaysia to become the second-largest transnational education (TNE) partner for universities in the United Kingdom, making up an impressive 10 percent of total UK TNE enrollments last year.
- With a contribution of $25.2 million (Rs 7.2 billion) over three years, the UK announced a program to improve education access for over 250,000 Pakistani children.
AFRICA UPDATES
- Ethiopia’s Ministry of Innovation and Technology has recruited 150,000 participants into the country’s ambitious Five Million Ethiopian Coders Initiative, expected to be rolled out in the next three years.
- Several universities in Nigeria have initiated online transcript systems to deliver an effective service. Students can now apply and pay online and receive their transcripts within days.
- The Kenyan president urges universities to specialize in core areas of academic strength to enhance their competitive advantage.
- The pressure on the Ghanaian Cedi continued as the local currency lost 3.95 percent against the US dollar in October 2024, taking its year-to-date depreciation to nearly 29 percent.
