ASIA UPDATES: India Revises Travel Restrictions

  • India crosses 175,000 daily new cases amid a continuing surge of Omicron in the country. This has nudged several states, including Delhi, Maharashtra and Gujarat to impose fresh restrictions to curb the spread. The country also revises travel restrictions and imposes a stricter quarantine policy. 
  • Bangladesh to keep education institutions open amid the ongoing COVID-19 situation. 
  • Schools in Nepal will remain closed for 3 weeks until January 29, 2022. Over 1000 new COVID cases were recorded last Sunday, as many as 24 Omicron cases confirmed in the country.
  • In light of the upward trend of COVID-19 cases, Pakistan issues new travel rules starting from January 5, 2022. 
  • Many schools and universities in the Philippines cease online classes as fresh coronavirus cases cross the 25,000 mark. 
  • Indonesia restricts the travel of passengers from the UK, Norway and Denmark, South Africa and many other African countries. 
  • Singapore suspends new ticket sales for quarantine-free travel for international students and travellers till January 20, 2022. Currently, only citizens and permanent residents are allowed to enter the country.
  • Thailand tightens entry restrictions amid the surge of Omicron variant cases. 
  • As the COVID-19 situation comes to normalcy, a total of 114,183 Cambodian students appear for a national high school graduation exam.
  • Vietnam’s edtech market rises 50% to $3 billion in 2020, up from about $2 billion in 2019. The country is also mulling over reopening plans and quarantine rules.
  • The UAE suspends inbound flights from four African countries – Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia and Nigeria. It also bans travel for passengers who were in these countries 14 days prior to their arrival in the UAE.

  • To slow down infection in the country, Kenya will start giving COVID-19 booster shots to its citizens.
  • Nigeria witnesses declining COVID-19 cases, as the country now registers a weekly average of 700 new cases.

  • With new daily infections crossing the 65,000 mark, authorities in Turkey are mulling new measures to fight the pandemic.

  • To benefit international students seeking higher studies in the US, the US Department of State adjusts its guidance for consular officers. As per new guidelines, officers should only look at ‘present intent to depart the US at the end of the program.
