Decoding implications of Union Budget on foreign institutions.

Union Budget 2022 of India has remained one of the most revolutionary initiatives to bring international varsities into the country and reduce hassles for students aspiring to study abroad. We’ll quickly walk through the ‘how’ part of it in this edition. 

  • Introduction of GIFT IFSCA in Gujarat, a new route to encourage world-class foreign universities to set up campuses in India and offer programs in various subjects like Financial Management, Fintech, Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics.
  • Focus on Skill Development and Vocational Education, The Skill Hub Initiatives will be launched in 5000 centres.
  • Announced the ‘Digital University’ to provide superior quality universal education and tailor-made learning experience. The university will collaborate with premier Indian universities and provide high-quality content in different languages and ICT formats. This is expected to empower the youth with skills crucial to pursuing foreign degrees.

ASIA UPDATES: CBSE Term 2 class 10 and 12 exams to start from April 26

  • CBSE Term 2 exam for class 10 and 12 will be conducted offline from April 26 this year.
  • Starting February 15, Vietnam’s aviation authorities will lift limits on the number of international flights.
  • The Philippines lags behind many Asian counterparts in basic education spending levels. Education expenditure in the country has increased by just 6.4% y-o-y over the past 15 years.
  • Thailand approves an education reform project to equip graduates with the knowledge and work skills to make them job-ready. 
  • Malaysia to allow fully vaccinated students of higher learning institutions to return to campus in stages starting March 1 this year. However, students and staff on campus need to follow strict COVID-19 protocols. 
  • The World Bank applauds Saudi Arabia’s response to the COVID-19 pandemic in K–12 education. This further reveals the potential and opportunities in the country’s digital and distance education experience. 
  • Bangladesh extends closure of schools by two weeks due to a surge in Omicron cases.

EURASIA UPDATES: Turkey announces scholarships for the academic year 2022

  • Turkey’s Ministry of Higher Education announces scholarships for the academic year 2022 for undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Popular grant program, ‘Türkiye Scholarships’ for international students, attracts massive attention from Somali youth. 
  • Russia experiences an increase in the number of foreign students by 26,000 in 3 years.

STUDY DESTINATION UPDATES: New Zealand eases borders restrictions 

  • After a delayed reopening of the borders, international students return to Australia after almost two years. More than 56,000 have arrived in the country since November 2020. 
  • The UK lifts all travel restrictions and testing requirements for fully vaccinated travellers. 
  • Ireland announces additional funding of €1.3 million to help students in higher education deal with financial difficulties. 
  • According to the Universities of Netherlands (UNL), the government should put a limit on the number of international students allowed to sustain the quality of education. 
  • After being closed for almost two years, New Zealand announces phased reopening of its border.
