Canada | Further limits international student numbers
As part of several outlined changes to the country’s International Student Program, Canada imposes additional restrictions on international study permits, decreasing the number of study permits to 437,000 by 2025. Read more here.
Australia | Universities slash their international student allocation cap
As many as 15 Australian universities, including the Australian National University, the University of Sydney and the University of Melbourne, have decided to slash their international student allocation cap. Read more here.
Germany | Indian students enrollment continue to climb
According to data from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD), regional office in New Delhi, Indian students now form the largest international student community in Germany for the second year in a row, and this number has more than doubled in the last five years. Read more here.
United Kingdom | Increases financial requirements for international students
Amid the rising cost of living in the UK, the UK government has announced an increase in the financial savings that international students must show to secure a student visa. The changes will be effective from January 2, 2025. Read more here.
United States | Witnesses growth in international applications
According to IIE’s Spring 2024 Snapshot survey, 53% of universities surveyed indicated that international applications were up compared to the previous year. Meanwhile, 30% said that numbers had remained the same, and 17% recorded a decrease. Download the report here.
ASIA UPDATES
- The University of Southampton commemorates its new campus in Gurugram, India. Initially, it will offer four undergraduate and two postgraduate programmes.
- The University of Tsukuba launched its first branch campus outside of Japan, making it the country’s first Japanese degree-granting branch campus in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
- Vietnamese students face long waits when applying for Australia’s visas. The visa approval rate is 78.7%, the lowest in 18 years.
- As per HSBC’s Quality of Life report, which surveyed more than 11,200 affluent adults in 11 markets around the world, Singapore is emerging as a top destination for younger parents from Mainland China, India, Malaysia and Taiwan.
AFRICA UPDATES
- Cameroon experiences a sharp drop in the 2024 French baccalaureate exam pass rate.
- The General Union of Mauritanian Students, or UGEM, and the National Union of Mauritanian Students, or UNEM have rejected a decision by the country’s Ministry of Higher Education and Scientific Research to only allow masters and doctoral students to attain scholarships for studying abroad.
- South Africa will be rolling out five brand new universities. Currently, the country has 26 official government-owned universities under their belt, but the National Development Plan has plans to expand this.
- The federal government in Nigeria has announced that the 115 Federal Unity Colleges in the country will soon be unbundled into basic and secondary schools.
