ASIA UPDATES

  • As reported in India’s current account balance, the growing inclination of Indian students to pursue higher education overseas and the declining enrolment of international students in Indian universities are contributing in part to the US$6 billion deficit.
  • India’s Ministry of External Affairs has revealed that more than 13.35 lakh students are currently pursuing higher studies in countries abroad.
  • The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), India, is expected to release the CBSE Class 10 Compartment Results 2024 anytime soon on the official CBSE website at cbse.nic.in, and on cbseresults.nic.in and results.cbse.nic.in.
  • Singapore eases norms for foreign students to apply for Singapore Permanent Residency (PR) if they have passed at least one national exam or are part of the Integrated Programme.
  • Japanese universities are taking proactive steps to attract international students by expanding the range of courses taught in English.
  • Thailand extends visa exemption for nationals from 93 countries/territories, allowing them to stay in Thailand for up to 60 days without needing to apply for a visa in advance.

AFRICA UPDATES

  • Teach For Liberia (TFL) has positively impacted approximately 40,177 Liberian students since its inception in 2019.
  • Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has disbursed N1.17 billion to 20,000 students in various institutions across the country.
  • According to the African Union Development Agency – New Partnership for Africa’s Development (AUDA-NEPAD), the continent’s primary technical and development body, many African tertiary institutions offer artificial intelligence (AI) courses that have outdated curricula.
  • Figures from the Global System for Mobile Communications Association (GSMA) show that Kenya received $15 million (Sh1.95 billion) in AI venture capital investment last year, dwarfing the $2.9 million (Sh377.9 million) transferred to Nigeria during the period.
  • With Nigeria projected to be the world’s fourth most populous country, the effect of inaccessible tertiary education does not bode well for a country with a median age of 17.2.
  • Jordanian Minister of Higher Education and Scientific Research meets representatives from Thailand, the Philippines, Malaysia, and Indonesia to facilitate recognition of higher education institutions and attract more international students from these countries.
