ASIA UPDATES

  • India has made significant strides in primary education, reaching a participation rate of 94% in 2023, edging close to the 99% national target set for 2025.
  • Over 60 faculty members from various universities in Uzbekistan came together to exchange their experiences and insights gained from their semester-long trips to universities in the United States.
  • During Vietnam’s 2024 national high school graduation examination, the average English score of 5.51 out of 10 was notably the lowest among all tested subjects.
  • Sri Lanka has revealed its intention to seek the support of UNESCO for an extensive modernization effort aimed at the country’s education sector, in addition to support from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.
  • A study conducted by the Japan Student Services Organization suggests that 90,719 foreign students were enrolled in Japanese language schools as of May 1, 2023, which is the highest number since the first JASSO study was conducted in 2011, and an 83.6% year-on-year increase of around 40,000 students.

AFRICA UPDATES

  • The Ethiopian Aviation University, part of the Ethiopian Airlines Group, has announced its efforts to provide extensive aviation training by signing agreements with African countries.
  • Zimbabwe’s president has suggested that the nation’s new gold-backed currency will become the sole legal tender before the 2030 deadline. This shift would phase out the US dollar, currently used in over 80% of transactions.
  • Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Prof. Tahir Mamman, has decided to take a u-turn from 18 years to the previous rule of allowing students as young as 16 years to apply for admission into universities and other tertiary institutions.
  • Malawi’s Ministry of Education, through the Education Reform Program (MERP), has engaged 4200 temporary Auxiliary teachers to be deployed in various primary schools across the country.
