Ireland is becoming increasingly popular among Indian students seeking higher education abroad. In 2021-22, there was a 20% surge in international student enrollment in Ireland, with over 30,400 international students and approximately 4,000 from India. Read more here.

Australia | Signs new agreement with India, which promises extension of visas

India and Australia recently inked a migration and mobility partnership pact to open opportunities for students, academic researchers and business people. Under this scheme, Indian graduates of Australian tertiary institutions on a student visa can apply to work without sponsorship for up to eight years. Read more here.

ASIA UPDATES

  • As per the report by PTI, India is emerging as the fastest-growing outbound destination, as Indians are expected to spend over $42 billion annually on outbound travel by 2024. 
  • According to the Commission on Higher Education (CHED), there’s an increase in students applying to Philippines state universities and colleges (SUCs) following the implementation of the free higher education policy.  
  • The University Grants Commission (UGC) of Sri Lanka and the World Bank have joined forces to advance higher education operations in the South Asia Region, which includes knowledge exchange and showcasing recent advancements in higher education. 
  • Higher education in Pakistan is expected to get an allocation of Rs 45 billion in the budget for the next financial year, which is expected to increase further.
  • RMIT university supports Vietnam with AUD 250 million strategic investment, which will see investment in education, research, partnerships and campus infrastructure.
  • As per Malaysia’s Higher Education Ministry, the country will allow the utilization of artificial intelligence (AI)-driven ChatGPTs in institutions of higher learning (IPTs) as long as the usage complies with the set guidelines.

AFRICA UPDATES

  • The University of Cape Town (UCT) remains the best university in Africa and has been ranked 267th worldwide, up three places from last year, by the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR) in their 2023 Global 2000 list.
  • Universities in East Africa need to recruit more than 35,500 lecturers to meet the desired student-to-teacher ratio (STR) in various subject areas, and an even higher number of faculty to have the ideal number of teaching staff in their lecturing halls and laboratories.
  • The recently introduced policy by the UK to limit family visas for a few international students is expected to affect students from various African nations, including Nigeria.
  • With eight laureates chosen during its 2nd edition, the programme of “Partnerships with African higher education” doubled its network, including now 14 African higher education institutions and 35 French institutions. 
  • The Ethiopian Ministry of Education has revealed that only four schools in Ethiopia have met the Ministry’s rigorous standards classified as “high” following an extensive evaluation conducted on 47,000 schools nationwide
