Netherlands | Aims to control the number of foreign students

Under plans published by the education minister Robbert Dijkgraaf, international students are encouraged to learn Dutch, and their numbers will be restricted in some programs. The Netherland’s minister also aims to maintain a desirable number of international students and plans to intervene if too many foreign students apply to the universities. Read more here.

  

Australia | Five universities place restrictions on Indian students

Amidst a surge in fraudulent visa applications, at least five Australian universities have placed bans or restrictions on international students from some Indian states. Read more here.

United Kingdom | India dominates the student population in England and Wales

As per the Office for National Statistics, Indians make up the largest student population in England and Wales, with 43,175 enrolled at higher educational institutions in 2021. As per this study, India forms 11.6 per cent of the non-UK-born student population. Read more here.

United States | Plans to prioritize visa applications of Indian students

According to a senior official, the US visa administration has plans to issue more than a million visas to Indians this year and ensure all Indian student visas for the fall session are processed. Read more here

Finland | Targets 15,000 international students by 2030

Finland aims to replicate the student growth success in European countries such as Germany, France, Italy, Ukraine and aims to host 15,000 foreign students by 2030, with a main focus on Indian students. Read more here.

ASIA UPDATES

  • The results for the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) class 10 and 12 exams are expected to be released by the second week of June.  
  • International students who wish to study in Singapore for a PhD program can apply for the Singapore International Graduate Award (SINGA).
  • The British Council in the Philippines plans to launch new courses and degree programs in teacher education, health sciences, and biology as it seeks to expand its collaboration with the Commission on Higher Education (CHEd) for 2023.
  • As per the Korea Immigration Service report, close to 200,000 international students are studying in South Korea as of February 2023, with 70,212 Vietnamese students dominating the student population, followed by China and Uzbekistan. 
  • The Education Malaysia Global Services (EMGS) is taking steps to strengthen ties with Kazakhstan in higher education by embarking on a four-day visit to the country this March. 

AFRICA UPDATES

  • Universities in the West and Eastern Europe compete intensely for African students to further diversify their campuses.
  • Cloud computing provider Amazon Web Services (AWS) announces to train 10,000 Kenyan students in local universities with key tech skills in a plan that seeks to impart ICT-based competencies to this demographic.
  • Thanks to the high success rate of study visa applications, Hungary is gradually becoming a favorite study option for African students.
  • Nairobi, Kenya has become home to some of Africa’s most expensive international schools. The latest data from the International Schools Database (ISD) shows that schools charge Sh4.2 million ($30,934 per year) on average.
